I have been known to purchase expensive beer bread mixes. Why? I had no idea how easy it was to make beer bread on my own without a mix. Food manufacturers have convinced us that we need all the convenience foods and mixes that they produce, and I am guilty of falling for their advertising way to often. Sometimes we don’t realize how easy it is to prepare foods on our own. We buy convenience food thinking they are time savers, when the truth is that they often only save us a few seconds. This bread is so simple to make, and has a total of six ingredients! Six! The original recipe used self-rising flour, which further reduces the ingredients to a total of four. (I didn’t happen to have self-rising flour on hand, but if you do, simply omit the baking powder and the salt.) The beer bread mix I was using had three ingredients: the mix, beer, and butter. I mean, how hard it is it to measure and mix in a few more ingredients? Now, if the beer bread from the mix tasted significantly better, it might be worth it. But how often is a mix better than homemade? I can honestly say that my family enjoyed this bread as much as they did the breads I have made from mixes.

You can use whatever beer you like for beer bread, or use non-alcoholic near beer. We don’t drink much beer around here, and I would guess we actually buy more to use in bread than we do to drink! This time I used Samuel Adams Winter Lager. It is a seasonal brew that is brewed with freshly ground cinnamon, orange zest, and ginger. I had not tried this particular brew before, and I thought it gave the bread a great taste. Some of my favorite beers to use in beer bread are from Leinenkugel’s. My favorite is Honey Weiss, with Berry Weiss coming in as a close second. What's your favorite beer to use in beer bread?

DeleteHomemade beer bread is the best. Great football snack too. These photos are beautiful, Jill!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cassie!
DeleteI love beer bread but always forget about making it. Yours looks wonderful. Wish I had thought to make it tonight for SuperBowl to go with my chili. Although I guess it's not too late, I have all the ingredients on hand. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteDid you make it? We finished the last of our bread last night with chili and it does go really good with it.
DeleteThis is too easy NOT to make. I like beer bread as well, and it gives me an excuse to try the Samuel Adams Winter Lager. You always have such exciting recipes and I agree with Cassie: your photos are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThanks Alaiyo! I hope you enjoy it!
DeleteOh yum! I love it! I can't believe it's that easy. Thank you for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteYour are welcome!
DeleteThis sounds wonderful. I have never eaten beer bread before, I will have to try this one. I think that made from scratch is always better than making something from a mix.
ReplyDeleteI agree--better and often not much more difficult to make.
DeleteTo be honest, I have never made bread at home neither with beer as one of the ingredients. However, after looking at the outcome of the bread you made with beer, I am all the more tempted as they simply look divine and a perfect start for the day.
ReplyDeleteI was kind of surprised at how good it turned out!
DeleteBeer bread is something my hubs is always after me to make. Your bread here does look tasty, so I am saving this version. The extra bonus is that it is fairly easy to make!
ReplyDeleteIt really doesn't get much easier than this! I hope you and your husband enjoy it!
DeleteJill,
ReplyDeleteI have to make this bread for my husband. He loves Sam Adams Beer. this recipe is so quick, and sounds delicious.
It is surprisingly good for how easy it is and how few of ingredients it contains! I hope you both enjoy it!
DeleteSeriously?! That is it? I am pinning this, and making it soon! I had no idea how easy it was! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSeriously!! I hope you enjoy it Erin!
DeleteMorning Miss Jill, isn't that funny how you think something is hard then you make it and then think, man why have I been buying this all this time. I bet the beer made that bread smell so good. I hope you have a wonderful week.
ReplyDelete-Gina-
Yes! I never could have imagined how easy it is! Hope you have a great week as well Gina!
DeleteOh Jill how I do love beer bread especially toasted up with a little Earth Balance on top.
ReplyDeleteMy husband on the other hand thinks it is a waste of a perfectly good beer...what does he know !!!
Hahaha! I hope you enjoy it, even if your husband doesn't!
DeleteWell Missy DD, you've inspired me again! I have never made a bread like this simply cause I would be intimidated. I am definitely going to make this for my family. I am not a beer drinker so I am going with your recommendation, plus added spices are nice addition I think. Your photo screams yummy!!
ReplyDeleteI hope you and your family enjoy it Rubi!
DeleteI used to be the same way until I made it at hoe as well - now there's no need for the box! My favorite is actually a hard cider with a little bit of apple and some cinnamon thrown in for good measure. Sprite or ginger ale also work in a pinch if you don't have or keep beer on hand!
ReplyDeleteThe hard cider with apple and cinnamon sounds wonderful! I will have to try that! And it's good to know Sprite and ginger ale work too!
DeleteWow, this bread looks amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Asmita!
DeleteAmazing bread, Jill. Love beer bread recipes...your, by far is the best I've seen. Would love to try it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing:DDD
Thanks Elisabeth!
DeleteHey Jill, I've never made beer bread...yours looks so moist, I imagine it's from the beer? I love the beer you chose with the spices...I noticed it's seasonal...will it be in season much longer. Thanks for the other options. I also love that it's a quick bread...I need to try this!
ReplyDeleteIt is fairly moist, and I would guess that is from the beer. I checked the Samuel Adams website, and I didn't see dates for when it is available. If you can't find it, I am sure that there are other beers that would be really good as well.
DeleteI've never made beer bread, kind of surprised me that it isn't made with yeast because it really looks like a yeast bread. I guess it has a yeast flavor from the beer, anyway it looks amazing and I would like to give it a try;-)
ReplyDeleteIt does look like a yeast bread, doesn't it? To me it has a nice flavor that is different from yeast breads.
DeleteI have used soda in the gluten free bread. Your beer bread looks so good that I am tempted to try with beer.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy it Balvinder!
DeleteGreat! I love beer bread, and this looks really great... Thanks for sharing your recipe :)
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome!
DeleteI love beer bread. Thanks for sharing.

DeleteHaven't had beer bread in a LONG while...yours looks terrific!
ReplyDeleteThanks Angie!
DeletePerfect bread!!! When we were in college, my roommates and I tried to make beer bread. We thought it was just mixing flour and beer (we didn't think to add a leavener). It made a gloppy mess :)
ReplyDeleteHahaha! Yes, you do need some kind of leavening agent!
DeleteSPOT ON about those ridiculous mixes.... flour and a little baking powder, I mean really???
ReplyDeleteGreat recipe and always a delicious bread!
Thanks for sharing, eRecipecards.com
Dave

ReplyDeleteMy husband just came into my office and said, "six ingredients? what are you on about??"
ReplyDeleteI can't believe this beautiful bread is this easy to make. I suppose I never really thought about making beer bread myself - but six ingredients speaks my language.
I think from-scratch recipes are always better than mixes! This recipe looks terrific.
ReplyDeleteBeer bread is one of the bread, I need to try. I will try after finishing feeding with baby.Looks perfect .
ReplyDeleteWell done! Beer bread is the only beer I can actually successfully make (or at least it was...that was like 5 years ago.) I'ma have to give this one a try and see if I'm still up for the challenge. Yours looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the recipe! i was so inspired that i made it last night after reading about it, it is so delicious and sweet! we havent had this bread before and now is going to be a favourite...all your recipes are great, thanks for sharing them! xx

ReplyDeleteI love making beer bread. It's so simple to throw together and always tastes great. I'll have to bookmark this recipe and give it a try sometime soon!
ReplyDeleteThanks for share
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try this recipe over the weekend. I also happen to have a box mixed on hand from Tastefully Simple. I think I'll do a blind taste test because my family LOVES beer bread. I like making most things from scratch, so I'm not sure why I buy boxed mixes for this. Thanks for the great recipe. :-) And Samuel Adams is definitely the best beer to use...it's our favorite.
ReplyDeleteIt's in the oven right now! I used a Cowboy Coffee Porter. It smells amazing! Can't wait to taste it!
ReplyDeleteI baked us a beer bread over the weekend and also made some beer beef stew to go with it. So simple to make the bread :) thank you for the really nice recipe :)
